Independence Day is celebrated every year on 15 August   . It is a national holiday in India and is one of the three gazetted holidays along with Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti. All government offices, private offices, banks and schools remain closed on this day. There are very few exceptions where some private offices may remain open on this day as per their internal policy. But mostly, every institution celebrates this day by marking it as a day. The year 2022 will mark the seventy-sixth year of independence from British rule.

History of India’s Independence

British rule in India began in 1858 when the East India Company handed over powers to Queen Victoria after the Revolt of 1857. The Revolt of 1857 marked the first uprising against foreign rule on Indian soil. Inspired by this, many campaigns were launched by the freedom fighters of the country to get the country’s independence. To achieve this independence many movements were started such as non-cooperation movement by Mahatma Gandhi, Quit India movement led by Congress, Indian National Army movement led by Subhash Chandra Bose and many others. As a joint result of the country’s freedom fighters, the British were forced to declare India’s independence. However, before independence, the country split into two nations, called the Partition of India, and a new nation, Pakistan, was formed.

Independence Day of India is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the country and almost every office, school, bank etc celebrate this festival with flag hoisting. After the hoisting of the flag, the national anthem Jana Gana Mana is played and marches are also taken out at many places. The institutions which remain closed on this day celebrate Independence Day a day before. Many cultural programs based on patriotic themes are organized in schools and colleges as a part of Independence Day celebrations. Decoration with tricolor balloons and distribution of sweets is also a famous practice on the occasion of Independence Day. On the eve of Independence Day, the President of India delivers the speech “Address to the Nation”.

  3. Mahatma Gandhi was not able to celebrate the first Independence Day in Delhi as he was working to end the Hindu-Muslim riots taking place there in Bengal.
  4. After the declaration of complete independence in Lahore session in 1929, the Indian National Congress celebrated 26 January 1930 as Independence Day.
  5. India retained King George VI as head of state until the adoption of the Constitution of India on 26 January 1950 (celebrated as India’s Republic Day).
  6. When Pakistan was carved out of India, the country of Bangladesh was part of it and it was called East Pakistan.
  7. In addition, the countries of Bahrain, North Korea, South Korea, Republic of Congo and Liechtenstein also celebrate their Independence Day on 15 August.
